The discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed "To Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine", offers a small medieval castle for rent, above a bay on the Italian Riviera. Four very different women - the dishevelled and downtrodden Mrs Wilkins, the sad, sweet-faced Mrs Arbuthnot, the formidable widow Mrs Fisher and the ravishing socialite Lady Caroline Dester - are drawn to the shores of the Mediterranean that April. As each, in turn, blossoms in the warmth of the Italian spring and finds their spirits stirring, quite unexpected changes occur.

The Enchanted April Classic bestseller eBook Elizabeth von Arnim

Four women, who don't really know each other at all, rent an Italian castle together. What could go wrong?

Not too much actually.

This book was interesting and enjoyable. At first you can kind of pick out different kinds of travelers/vacationers. The host/bossy/incharge one. The chill one. The active one. The one that just wants to be left alone.

These women were all having some sort issue with their life in London. Husband problems. Loneliness. Not being left alone. Shallow relationships. And this "heavenly" Italian castle helps them to find themselves, solve their issues and make new friends.

It's not really a magical/enchanted book as the title might allude to. Though, to me, it seems like what a holiday should feel like. Relaxing. Beautiful scenery. A time to think and get away from your problems. A time by yourself, with family, with friends or all of the above. A good vacation book!

The Enchanted April Classic bestseller eBook Elizabeth von Arnim Reviews

I have loved the movie for the many years it has been out, and the book is a good adjunct, expanding but not replacing the celluloid characters. Amazingly, the movie did an excellent job thruout (sadly not always the case) and, in my opinion, actually improved the ending! Sappy perhaps but I like this sap, and I loved being there with the women.
I loved this book. It made me want to rent a villa in Italy! Well written and descriptive. The book was written shortly after WW 1 when life was pretty dismal and so many men had died. Rose and Lottie find themselves renting a villa in Italy seeking relief from their dreary housewife life. I felt I could relate to Rose and Lottie and how they felt the need to go somewhere beautiful where there was sunshine and flowers blooming. Read the book and then watch the movie (The later one with Michael Kitchen) With only a slight variation the movie actually follows the book. One of my favorite books!
So LOVED the characters. Ah, life, it's complicated, isn't it! I am told I need to write 10 more words in order to leave a review. Now I'm over, now what? See what I mean about complicated.
This is a classic. The women in this book find their inner strength and the men learn to appreciate them. The descriptions of the gardens & scenery almost make you smell the flowers. About to read others of hers. Just wish I had read this year's ago.
Difficult sentence construction that may be aimed to make it sound more British makes it difficult to read. Very clumsy. I cannot recommend this book. The development of characters is lacking in some respects also. However, the sentence construction makes it a hard read. Perhaps fans of British dramas will look over it. Even after living in England for five years I found it contrived.
The novel is excellent. This version is faulty, though. There are more typos than one finds in a printed book, and some strange formatting on the screen every time there is dialogue. These faults somewhat distract from enjoying the story. I hope the version of the author's collected works is better.
This is an old book, a classic that I'd somehow missed. The style of narration is dated, and it takes time to adjust to it as a modern reader. However, it's so worth the effort. The changes wrought by this charming Italian setting on its cast of lonely British characters are immense and absolutely delightful. In the hands of a patient reader, this book will transform its readers as much as its characters are transformed by Italy and each other. Readers who take the time to savor this book will be rewarded with a book that can be cherished long after it's final page. I highly recommend it!
